Characterizing the Quality of Insight by Interactions: A Case Study

Understanding the quality of insight has become increasingly important with trend allowing users to post comments during visual exploration, yet approaches for qualifying are rare. This article presents a case study investigate possibility characterizing via interactions performed. To do this, we devised interaction visualization tool-MediSyn-for generation. MediSyn supports five types interactions: selecting, connecting, elaborating, exploring, and sharing. We evaluated 14 participants by them freely explore data generate insights. then extracted seven patterns from their logs correlated four aspects quality. The results show insights interactions. Among other findings, exploration actions can lead unexpected insights; drill-down pattern tends increase domain values A qualitative analysis shows that using knowledge guide positively affect value derived discuss study's implications, lessons learned, future research opportunities.
